Emmy Award Nominations Put Focus on ‘Cats, On and Off Camera
The Television Academy announced on Tuesday the nominees for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, and School of Communication alumni are among many of the high-profile talent on the ticket.
Notably, Stephen Colbert (C86, H11) received three nods this year, bringing his career Emmy nomination tally to 41; he has won nine times. Kathryn Hahn (C95) received a nomination, her second overall, for her buzzworthy turn in WandaVision. Superproducer Greg Berlanti (C94) also received his second nomination as executive producer, this one for The Flight Attendant. Ashley Nicole Black (GC08) is competing against herself for the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series award—she’s nominated for her work on The Amber Ruffin Show and A Black Lady Sketch Show.
Much closer to campus, Marco Williams, professor in the Department of Radio/Television/Film, received his first nomination in the category of Outstanding Writing for a Nonfiction Program for Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre. The documentary premiered on the History Channel in May.

- Ashley Nicole Black (GC08) for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series and for Outstanding Writing for Variety Sketch Series for The Black Lady Sketch Show and writing for The Amber Ruffin Show. Robin Thede (Medill01) is creator and executive producer of the show, which received five nominations overall
- Zach Braff (C97) for Outstanding Director for a Comedy Series for the Ted Lasso episode “Biscuits”
- Stephen Colbert (C86, H11) for Outstanding Variety or Talk Series as the host of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert; for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series for The Late Show With Stephen Colbert; for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) as the host of Stephen Colbert’s Election Night 2020: Democracy’s Last Stand Building Back America Great Again Better 2020; and for Outstanding Short Form Comedy for Stephen Colbert Presents Tooning Out The News
- Kathryn Hahn (C95) for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role as Agatha Harkness on WandaVision
- Jenny Hagel (GC09) for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series for The Amber Ruffin Show
- Patrick Hogan (C92) Best Sound Editing in a Half Hour Comedy or Drama as the Sound Supervisor for the Netflix show Cobra Kai
- Seth Meyers (C96) for Outstanding Short Form Comedy for Late Night With Seth Meyers: CORRECTIONS
- Amanda Krieg Thomas (C07) for Outstanding Musical Supervision for the Halston episode “The Party’s Over”
- Marco Williams, professor in the Department of Radio/Television/Film for Outstanding Writing for a Nonfiction Program for Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre
Additionally, such nominated shows as Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special and Friends: The Reunion prominently featured alumni Meghan Markle (C03) and David Schwimmer (C88), respectively.
The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, will take place September 19 at 7 p.m. central on CBS.
