
Dr. Ashaie is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northwestern University. He also holds a joint appointment as a research scientist at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and a research assistant professor position in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Feinberg School of Medicine. He directs the Affect and Emotion Rehabilitation (AER) Lab.
His research primarily focuses on aphasia rehabilitation, particularly post-stroke depression and related psychosocial disorders with an emphasis on developing ecologically valid depression measures and non-linguistic biomarkers of depression. He also works on emotion recognition in right hemisphere stroke patients, linguistic changes in healthy aging, mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer's disease.
Dr. Ashaie uses qualitative, quantitative, and psychophysiological methodologies in his work with a special focus on network psychometrics, eye-tracking, heart-rate variability, and non-invasive brain stimulation.
His current research on post-stroke depression in stroke aphasia is funded by NIH NIDCD and NIH NICHD NCMRR.
