Galati was a full-time faculty member of the Department of Performance Studies from 1970 to 2005 when he became Professor Emeritus. He has won 10 Joseph Jefferson awards over the years for his work in Chicago theatre, and has directed operas at Chicago Lyric and the Metropolitan Opera. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay (with Lawrence Kasdan) of The Accidental Tourist. He has been a member of the Steppenwolf Ensemble since 1986. He won two Tony Awards for adapting and directing Steppenwolf’s production of The Grapes of Wrath and was nominated for a Tony Award for directing the musical Ragtime. Galati has been inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is currently an Associate Artist at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, Florida.
