Convocation

There are two types of graduation ceremonies at Northwestern: NU Commencement and the school Convocations.

  • Commencement is the university-wide event held on Friday, June 21, 2019 at Ryan Field.
  • Convocations are the school-specific events. The 2019 School of Communication Convocation will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2019 @ 4:00 p.m. in the newly renovated Welsh-Ryan Arena.

This represents a change in venue and time mentioned in our previous letter of November, 2018 and will be the first time in many years that all SoC undergraduates will convene for a single ceremony.

All students are required to wear caps and gowns for both events. During the School of Communication Convocation, each graduate will be photographed as they are congratulated by School of Communication Dean, Barbara O’Keefe.

Each senior who attends the 2019 Northwestern Commencement ceremony will receive 10 admission tickets to the University Wide Commencement and 10 tickets for guests to the School of Communication Convocation Ceremony. (Graduating students do not require a ticket.) Tickets guarantee admission, but do not reserve specific seats. Tickets to Commencement and Convocation will be distributed through the University Athletic Ticketing Office.  Students will be notified about securing their tickets via their Northwestern email account by the Northwestern Commencement Office and the SoC Student Resource Center in late April/early May.

Contingent upon the number or graduates, a limited number of additional tickets may become available.  Should extra tickets become available, students will be instructed via email about how to reserve up to 2 additional tickets, on a first come, first served basis.  Graduates will pick up their cap and gown in early June.
