WNUR News won first place in the “Best All Around Radio Newscast” category of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence Awards held March 27 at the Society of Professional Journalists’ annual regional conference in Chicago.
“This arguably means we’re the best college newscast in the region,” said School of Communication and WCAS junior and former WNUR news director John Rodier.
The region includes four-year colleges in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.
WNUR News entered the competition with three newscasts from different times in 2009, and the judges evaluated them as a group. The regional winners move on to the national competition, and the national winners will be announced in late spring and honored at the annual 2010 SPJ Convention & National Journalism Conference in Las Vegas Oct. 3-5.
WNUR staffers who were instrumental in the award process include: Nick Carbone, Sarah Gregory, Rachel Valdez, Dave Boucher, Yannell Selman, Brandon Samuels, Laura Rodriguez, Ali Bruzek, Zoe Jennings, Nick Zessis and Amanda NeMoyer.
WNUR broadcasts news updates three times every weekday at 9:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., and occasionally does special broadcasts.
“Last spring we had all four candidates for mayor of Evanston in our studio for a debate, and this fall we had a live on-air panel discussion about the legal troubles facing the Medill Innocence Project and what implications it could have for the future of free speech,” Rodier said. “Our staffers are students from different schools within the university, with an expected emphasis on SoC and Medill.”
